Tom Cruise: The Short True Tale Of A Fake Autograph
With A Happy Ending.
This story begins on a major Internet auction website, how surprising. I purchased a Tom Cruise autograph, and I should bring to your attention at this point that I new before purchase that the autograph was fake, but what I really wanted was the frame it was in, so I was really bidding on the frame and not the autograph. Anyway's I figured that this exercise would make for a good story on fraud in autographs, and may provide a very valuable lesson for inexperienced autograph collectors and so here it is.
My framed autograph turned up as expected with no return address on the envelope, what a surprise, and the certificate as you can see below gives the usual rubbish, 100% guaranteed for life - with no name or anything relating back to the person this autograph was supplied from, again what a surprise.
Now here is the happy part to this story. With it being fathers day, I bought my dad a Matt Damon autograph on a poster reproduction photo of Good Will Hunting, his favorite movie, and the reason I purchased the frame for in the first place. So I took out the fake Tom Cruise and replaced it with the genuine Matt Damon.
On closer inspection of the Tom Cruise out of the frame a few things came to notice immediately about how the fakers really do there business. The signature itself was written in water soluble felt pen, and it just rubs straight off. Also on the photo, although I can't clearly show you on the scan so you will have to take my word for it, you can actually see the persons previous attempts at signing Tom's signature, deciding that it was not right, erasing the signature and starting again, so it goes to show that even some fakers have standards and they have to do things more than once to steal your money. If they only put real effort into doing the right thing, they would get a hell of a lot more out of autographs than just mere money.

I hope that this short true tale has has provided you with a bit of information to really think about.
And as a final note dad loves his real Matt Damon autograph and he had a great fathers day.
And for the record here are a few genuine signature examples of what a real Tom Cruise autograph should look like.
